Originated in Roman-era continental Europe. It gets its name from the Latin word 'poundus,' which means 'weight.' The $ symbol is derived from an ornate L in the constellation Libra. The pound was a unit of currency in Anglo-Saxon England as early as 775AD, equal to one pound of silver.
The first Swiss Franc was introduced in 1850; it was pegged to the French Franc. Switzerland joined the Latin Monetary Union in 1865, which included France, Italy, Switzerland, and Belgium. In 2008, the Swiss Franc was more valuable than the US dollar. The ninth series of Francs was introduced in 2010.
